You Probably know about the Italian motorcycle maker MV Augusta. Claudio Castiglioni, the man at MV Augusta’s helm, has been searching for a credible buyer for the financially troubled company for some time now.
Volkswagen was the company in he running that was supposed to be taking a controlling stake in the motorcycle brand, but there could be a complete turnaround of things. Whispers are going round in the Indian press are that Tata Motors could be very keen to purchase a major portion of the Italian motorcycle maker. Another Indian auto major, Mahindra, is also rumored to be preparing to bid for MV Augusta. Mahindra already enjoys an Italian connection, via its controlling stake in Stile Bertone, the Italian automotive design facility.
Earlier in the year, Benelli, another famous bike manufacturer from Italy, was bought by Qianjiang Group, the biggest motorcycle maker of China. So what price an Indian purchaser of another great Italian Marque? Tata’s portfolio could take on a very interesting face if the company decides to get associated with the motorcycle industry. Tata has already acquired two of the most iconic British automotive brands – Land Rover and Jaguar and with the equally iconic and bike maker MV Augusta joining the band, Tata motors would be presenting a very interesting face to the market.
